Maret Balkenstein-Grothues and Carli Lloyd

Cuiabá, Brazil, July 20, 2017 – USA beat the Netherlands 3-1 (25-15; 23-25; 28-26; 25-21) in their opening match of this weekend of action in the 2017 FIVB Grand Prix.

USA coach Karch Kiraly
– The game was hard as you can imagine as the Netherlands have a very good team. I can imagine that the fans had fun with the good performance of both teams. Now we must review the match and be prepared for Belgium.

USA captain Carli Lloyd – I think it was a good match. We played very good volleyball. They are a great team and were ahead of us many times during the game, and it took a lot for us to come back. Every set, and every point, they fought. I love the energy here at the gym, the fans here really know volleyball and we can feel that, it is so cool.

Netherlands coach Jamie Morrison – I must congratulate them because they took some of our main characters. We are learning as we go, and the difficulties are a part of the game. We will have another important match tomorrow and we need to be prepared.

Netherlands captain Maret Balkenstein-Grothues – It was a tough match for us. In the first set we had to adapt to their way of play. The next two sets we were good. They have a good service and there were some difficulties on our side. It was a nice battle for the audience. We are looking forward to play a great match against Brazil.
