Australian coaching staff enjoy their first WGP victory defeating Trinidad & Tobago
Aguascaliente, Mexico, July 9, 2017 - Head coach Shannon Winzer celebrated Australia’s first World Grand Prix victory with cheers of joy while outplaying Trinidad & Tobago 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-23) at Poliforum Cultural y Deportivo Universitario Morelos in Aguascalientes.
Shannon Winzer, Head Coach of Australia: “I am very emotional because it has been four years of hard work, my tears are of joy…it means a lot to our program. Trinidad came back hard in the third set, but we had a lot of patience and showed resilience, it was good to hold on and clinch the third. Serving is underrated at this level and it is one of the most important aspects of the game, we showed what aggressive serves can do to a result."
Rachel Rourke, top scorer for Australia: “It feels great to win our first match in the World Grand Prix, it has been a lot of years and we have been working hard together. I have been working a long time in serves, I am old. In this weekend we learned that we are good enough to win, we can come out and fight against all these teams as equals."

This event means a lot to our national team, it is a preparation for us; while our opponents come well prepared. My team lacks experience and that is why they lose concentration. We have to work harder in our passing and blocking. I want to thank the crowd, their support meant a lot."
Renele Forde, captain of Trinidad & Tobago: “It is definitely a tough loss. We had problems in passing their jump serves. Australia has a great serving team. In terms of errors, we made a lot of errors again. We powered up in the last set but unfortunately it was not enough to have another possible set. We have to keep practicing and looking forward to host the WGP and please our crowd."
