Mexico prepare to receive against Trinidad & Tobago
Aguascalientes, Mexico, July 8, 2017 – Hosts Mexico came back from a first-set loss to overcome FIVB World Grand Prix debutants Trinidad & Tobago 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-10) in Aguascalientes on Saturday.
Lizbeth Sainz was the key player once more for the Mexicans with 19 points, while teammate Dulce Carranza had 14. Krystle Esdelle led Trinidad & Tobago with 15 points, while Sinead Jack scored 11. Trinidad & Tobago had the edge in blocking points (15-11) but Mexico were superior in serves (5-4), setting (30-19) and reception (28-21). Trinidad & Tobago committed 39 errors to Mexico's 21.
With Trinidad & Tobago making their debut in the World Grand Prix, it was the two teams’ first meeting in the competition. However, the teams have met four times in the NORCECA Championship with Mexico winning all the meetings in straight sets.
The action was really close in the first set and the scores were tied on numerous occasions. Trinidad and Tobago’s towering block kept Mexico from scoring as they took the set 25-22.
It was a whole different game in Set 2 with Mexico overwhelming Trinidad & Tobago with effective kills. Sainz figured out a way to move around Trinidad’s blockers and pushed Mexico forward. Trinidad & Tobago’s pressure was evident in the number of unforced errors they had, especially in defence.
Trinidad & Tobago’s serves took Mexico out of their comfort zone after the hosts held a five-point lead in Set 3. Esdelle's offence was crucial in narrowing her team’s deficit, but Mexico continued to pressure their opponents and claimed a comfortable victory in the end.
