Novara close in on first Italian championship title

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 6, 2017 - Igor Gorgonzola Novara are within one win of their first ever Italian women's championship title, after defeating Liu Jo Nordmeccanica Modena 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21) Saturday night in third game of the best-of-five final series for a 2-1 overall lead.



The title could be decided as early as Thursday in Modena, or could be extended to a fifth game scheduled for next Sunday in Novara if needed. It is the last of the major domestic leagues around the world, ahead of the star players joining their National Teams for the European qualifiers of the 2018 FIVB World Championship iin early June and the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix in July.

Croatia's Katarina Barun led the offense for Novara, scoring 22 points, including five stuffs, as the home side dominated on the net. Cristina Chirichella added another 16 and Francesca Piccinini 14 for the home side. Neriman Ozsoy of Turkey was Modena's best scorer with 20 points and Jovana Brakocevic of Serbia added another 15.
