Fromm leads Germany to a 3-0 victory over Canada

Maren Fromm was Germany's top scorer with 14 points

Richmond, Canada, July 21, 2017 – Maren Fromm scored 14 points as Germany breezed past hosts Canada 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-20) in a Group 2 match in the FIVB World Grand Prix on Friday.

Fromm was one of three German players to score in double figures, along with Jennifer Geerties (12 points) and Louisa Lippman (10 points). Lippman and Leonie Schwertmann had three aces apiece out of Germany’s total of eight, which compared to Canada’s four.

Canada’s top scorer was Marie-Alex Belanger with 10 points. Canada committed 24 errors to Germany’s 17. Germany also dominated in digs (28-17) and setting (21-11), while Canada had the edge in reception (37-29).

After racing out to an 8-2 lead in the first set, Germany never looked like losing and were ahead at almost every point of the match, the first between the two teams in the World Grand Prix and their first meeting anywhere since the 1996 Olympic Games when Germany also won in straight sets.

The second set was tight in the early stages, until a run from Germany gave the visitors a 12-7 lead. The Canadians closed to within two points at 14-12, but Germany responded with a 4-0 run to secure a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. A kill from Germany’s Jennifer Geerties put her team on set-point and a Leonie Schwertmann ace finished it.

Canada came out fighting in the third set and grabbed a 7-6 lead. However, the Germans swung right back, going on a 5-0 run to turn the tables and went ahead 11-7. Canada climbed to within two points at 16-14, but never closer, with Germany holding off the home side the rest of the way. Geerties tallied the winning kill, with Germany nabbing the set by five points.

After losing their first match in this year’s competition, Germany have now won six straight and remain on course for a place in the Group 2 Finals. Canada dropped to 2-5.

Canada will take on Peru in its next match, while Germany will play the Czech Republic.
