Marín: We made history for our country

Chiclayo, Peru, July 09, 2017 - The Colombia team made history by securing their first win in Group 2 of the FIVB World Grand Prix with a surprise victory in straight sets over Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-16; 25-12; 26-24).

Antonio Rizola, Colombia coach:
I congratulate Puerto Rico because they made a great game, but unlike the Pan American Cup today we played well tactically and very disciplined, that makes me very happy because we are growing every day. Before the game the girls were worried about facing such a strong opponent, today the joy is great because for the first time in history Colombia wins Puerto Rico in the FIVB Grand Prix.

María Alejandra Marín, captain of Colombia: We are very happy because for the first time in history we were able to beat Puerto Rico, we knew they played very fast and they defended a lot, but today we had a lot of tactical discipline.

Javier Gaspar, coach of Puerto Rico: I congratulate the Colombian team because, unlike the Pan American Cup game, there is a great improvement. It is a team that will better in the future. In the game today we have kept problems in the reception and our service has not affected the rival, so they have had more offensive occasions. Today we fought  until the last set, but we made mistakes, we know the things that we have to improve and we will work so that little by little our level rises.

Natalia Valentín, captain of Puerto Rico: I think today we fail in the basic things of the game, especially in the pass. We struggle but not reached, we are in a learning process and there are many things we need to improve.
