Smarzek scores 17 in Poland's shutout of Canada

 

Neuquen, Argentina, July, 8, 2017 - At the Ruca Che of Neuquen, Poland remain unbeaten after a 3-0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-23) victory over Canada.

Malwina Smarzek repeated yesterday's performance and led the score sheet with 17 points. Benerika Tomsia, added 14 points for Poland. On the Canadian side, Alexa Gray tallied 11 points, followed by Elizabeth Wendel with 9.

Poland got off to a great start in the opener, taking a commanding 9-2 lead. The Canadian side were able to gradually close the gap getting within 2 points at 23-21. It was not enough, however, as a Canadian service error handed the set to Poland, 25-22. The second set was a drastically different story. The European side dominated the proceedings from start to finish snatching the set, 25-9.


The third set started off even with the teams tied at 11-all. At this point Poland put extra pressure on Canada and managed to build a four-point lead by the second technical time-out. Canada were able to make another comeback and tied things up again at 19-all to force an exciting finish. But in the end, two unforced errors in a row from Canada handed Poland the third set, 25-23.
