Canberra to host Group 3 Finals

Australia's women will be in action in front of their home fans in 2017

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 16, 2016 – Canberra will welcome some of the world’s leading volleyball teams in 2017 when it hosts the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Group 3 Finals from July 21-23.

It will be the second time that Australia’s capital has played host to the 2015 World Grand Prix Group 3 Finals, which were the biggest women’s volleyball event in Australia since the Sydney 2000 Olympics Games.

“At Volleyball Australia we have worked hard to make our mark on the world stage,” Volleyball Australia CEO Mathieu Meriaux said.

“We are proud that volleyball is the world’s most gender-equal sport, and that Australians are now embracing what is also such an exciting game.

“Every time we host international events, we get wonderful feedback. International teams love coming to our country, they know we put on a good show, and for us it further cements our place as one of Australia’s fastest growing sports.

“The finals will attract some of the most exciting indoor volleyball teams in the world.”

The Group 3 Finals will continue a run of top-level volleyball tournaments in Australia. Also in 2017 the Gold Coast will host the FIVB Volleyball World League Group 2 Finals from June 23-25.

In 2018 the Gold Coast will host the Commonwealth Games that feature beach volleyball for the firsts time and Volleyball Australia is bidding to host the Asian qualifying tournament for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.

Tickets for the World Grand Prix Group 3 Finals will go on sale in January.
