Szakmary delivers in Hungary’s first ever World Grand Prix group title

 

Greta Szakmary delivered another superb performance in scoring for Hungary as she led with 21 points to help her team earn their first ever World Grand Prix Group 3 title

Canberra, Australia, July 23, 2017 – Greta Szakmary delivered another strong performance that guaranteed the gold medal for Hungary, following their 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) win over Australia in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Group 3 final at the AIS Arena on Sunday.

World Grand Prix - Scores

Szakmary had 21 points, which she built on 19 attacks and two blocks. Australian scorers Rachel Rourke and Eliza Hynes recorded 15 and 14 points, respectively. Hungary led in attacks 49-41 and had fewer mistakes 8-15 against Australia to earn the Group 3 title.

World Grand Prix – Match Statistics by Teams

Hungary had a perfect debut in the World Grand Prix with an 8-0 winning start, extending their achievement in the semifinal as the first ever nation to win each of their first seven matches in the World Grand Prix.

Szakmary was solid on offence on the onset of the match and nicked seven hits and a block to lead Hungary secure the first set win. Australia silenced the Hungarian rally when they tied the score at 10-all, but Szakmary continued to find the open spots and directed her team to take a 2-0 set lead. The third set went down to the wire as Rourke and Hynes kept their side fighting, but Hungary prevailed in the final stretch for a straight-set triumph.
