Team profile

Canada

Canada first appeared in the FIVB World Grand Prix in 2003, but did not return to the competition until 11 years later, directly into Group 2. They finished 7th in the Group in 2014, 6th in 2015 and 7th again last year. Their best overall ranking remains their 11th place from 2003.
Canada have competed eight times at the FIVB World Championships – their best results 11th place in both 1974 and 1982. They have also taken part in three Olympic Games, finishing 8th in Montreal 1976 and Los Angeles 1984 and 9th in Atlanta 1996. They have won two silver and eight bronze medals at the NORCECA Championships, but have not made the podium since 1999. Canada also took bronze at the 1995 Pan American Games.

Marcello Abbondanza

Italian Marcello Abbondanza replaces German Arnd Ludwig as of this year on the Canadian bench. The 46-year-old began his coaching in the 1990s and worked for several women’s clubs in Italy, amongst which Pesaro which he led to the title of the CEV Cup in 2006 . In 2011 he made his first venture abroad to take charge of the women’s National Team of Bulgaria, where he stayed until 2014, leading the side to a silver and a bronze in the European League. At club level Abbondanza has led Rabita Baku in Azerbaijan which he led to silver at the 2012 FIVB Club World Championship and another silver at the 2013 European Champions League, before joining Turkey’s Fenerbahce Istanbul. He led Fenerbahce to several domestic titles, including this year’s, as well as the 2014 CEV Cup gold.
