Team profile

Croatia

Croatia joined the FIVB World Grand Prix and immediately qualified to the Group 3 finals, where they beat Kazakhstan for the Group bronze. Advancing to Group 2 in 2015, Croatia ranked bottom of the Intercontinental Round on an 0-6 record and were relegated back to Group 3, where in 2016 they beat Kazakhstan again – this time in the Group final to make it back to Group 2 for this year.Croatia competed at the 2014 FIVB World Championship ranking 13th overall. It was their third World Championship appearance after 6th place in 1998 and 17th in 2010. The team took encouragement from their fifth-place finish at the 2013 European Championship, where they lost to Germany in the quarterfinal. They were 10th in 2015. The glory days of Croatian women’s volleyball came in the 1990s when they took silver medals at the 1995, 1997 and 1999 European Championships and came fourth at the 1995 FIVB World Cup. Croatia have once qualified to the Olympic Games, making it to the quarterfinals at Sydney 200 and ranking 7th.

Miroslav Aksentijević

Miroslav Aksentijevic continues this year as coach of the women’s national team of Croatia. As he cocntinues his second stint at the helm of the squad. The 44-year-old was the National Team coach in 2009, when Croatia played the European Championship in Poland and a year later at the FIVB World Championship in Japan. He has also coached clubs outside Croatia, including Volero Zurich in Switzerland in the 2006-07 season and C.S.M. Bucharest in Romania.
