Peru took part in the second edition of the FIVB World Grand Prix in 1994, played again in 2011 and rejoined the competition for a straight run since 2014. Their best ranking remains their 11th place of 2011. In 2014 they were relegated from Group 2 and although they made the Group 3 Final Four in both 2015 and 2016, the failed on both counts to regain promotion. In 2015 they lost in the Group 3 final to Kenya 3-1 and last year they fell in the semifinals to Croatia also 3-1.
The golden age of Peruvian volleyball was in the 1980s when the team won silver at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, silver at the 1982 FIVB World Championship and bronze at the 1986 World Championship. They had previously finished fourth in the round robin Olympic tournament of Mexico 1968 and had lost to Japan 3-1 in the bronze medal match of Los Angeles 1984. More recently the team has failed to reach those heights, but at continental level, Peru have always been a force and have won a medal at every South American Championship, including a silver in 2015. They have won the title 12 times, most recently in 1993.
