Puerto Rico are making their eighth appearance at the FIVB World Grand Prix this year as they look to give it a fourth try at promotion to Group 1 after making the Group 2 Final Four three times running but losing every time 3-1 in the semifinals. Puerto Rico have appeared at the FIVB World Championships six times – consecutively since 2002. Their best made their best finish of 12th in 2002. They have enjoyed better results in continental competitions twice just missing out on the bronze of the Pan American Games after finishing fourth in the 1959 round robin final tournament and losing the bronze medal match 3-1 to the Dominican Republic in 2015. They took the silver medal at the 2009 NORCECA Championships, came fourth in 2011 and claimed bronze at the last two editions.
