Czechs seek first world win over Germans in 43 years

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 29, 2017 - The Czech Republic host Germany Sunday in Ostrava for the bronze medal of Group 2 in the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix. But the Czechs have not beaten Germany in a world competition since the 1974 FIVB World Championship. This is the second time the two sides clash this season, after Germany beat the Czech Republic in pool play last week in Richmond in straight sets.

Head-to-Head
• Germany have won their last four matches at world level against Czech Republic, or Czechoslovakia.
• The Czechs have not beaten Germany a world level (excluding continental championships) since the 1974 world championship, where Czechoslovakia beat West Germany.
• They met once before at the World Grand Prix. Earlier this season, Germany won 3-0 in Richmond, Canada.

Germany
• Germany looked to be cruising to a place in the final 1-2, when they were leading Korea 2-0 in sets on Saturday. Germany tasted defeat in five.
• This put an end to an eight-match winning streak for Germany, their longest ever in the World Grand Prix.
• Germany's only other defeat in the World Grand Prix this season came in their opener against Korea.

Czech Republic
• Czech Republic went a set up against Poland on Saturday, but eventually lost in four.
• Of their last three, Czech Republic have now last two. The other defeat came against Germany.
• Czech Republic have not yet suffered back-to-back defeats in the World Grand Prix this season.
