Australia made a promising start in the FIVB World Grand Prix when they finished fourth in the Group 3 Final Four they hosted in Canberra in 2015. Still, after three appearances in the competition, the ‘Volleyroos’ are still seeking their first win.
The team have competed in the Asian Championships for 40 years and the fourth-place finishes achieved in 1975 and 1979 remain their highest in the competition. Their most recent result was a ninth-place finish in 2015. Australia did not qualify for the 2014 FIVB World Championship in Italy, but they have taken part in the tournament twice, coming 12th in 1982 and 21st in 2002. They received welcome exposure when they competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, finishing ninth, but coach Shannon Winzer has her sights on Tokyo 2020 and beyond. A wave of retirement from the team’s more experienced players last year means Australia remain in rebuilding mode as they strive to break through.
