Hungary win World Grand Prix Group 3 gold medal

 

Hungary bagged the gold medal in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Group 3 Finals in Canberra, Australia

Canberra, Australia, July 23, 2017 – Hungary captured the Group 3 title in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix with a straight-set win over Australia for a record undefeated run, while fellow debutants France finished third in the podium at the AIS Arena on Sunday.

Hungary defeated hosts Australia 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) to win their first ever World Grand Prix title and set a record of eight straight wins on their debut. Hungary dominated Australia in the first two sets, but the hosts started to pick up their game and challenged Hungary in the third set. However, Hungary re-established their reign and scored the final points to complete their gold medal victory.

Greta Szakmary showed consistency in scoring and scored 21 points, including 19 attacks and two blocks. Szakmary has been Hungary’s scoring weapon in their 8-0 winning run in the World Grand Prix.

World Grand Prix Group 3 Final Standing

“I am very happy for this victory,” said Greta Szakmary on their win in Group 3. “We were focused on getting the gold and we played in this match to win it. This is a great achievement since we started the programme in 2015. This will actually give us a big boost in the future.”



After a solid preliminary round performance, France ended their unbeaten run in the semifinal match against Hungary in a five-set encounter. France bagged the bronze through a walkover.
