France set sights on World Grand Prix

Paris, France, April 20, 2017 - Recently appointed France women's coach Felix Andre has called up twenty players for a training camp in Belfort in May ahead of a busy summer including the team's first ever participation in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.

"The schedule is unusually busy for France's women's team this year," said Andre, who spoke to the French Volleyball Federation (FFVB) website. "First there will be the qualifiers for the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship in 2018. They will be  difficult because the teams in Europe are generally very strong. We will not be favourites, but qualification is one of our goals.

"This year's schedule then features the European League, which is a competition we want to do well in following in the steps of what was done by Magali Magail's team last year.

"The highlight, however, will be our participation in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, which France will participate in for the first time. For the players it will be what I call a 'choc of cultures'. We will take on teams playing very different styles of volleyball at an international level, including two African teams (Cameroon and Algeria), a South American team (Venezuela), a Caribbean team (Trinidad and Tobago) and Australia. And we will want to show what we can do and qualify for the Group 3 Finals."

France will participate in the FIVB's top annual competition for women's national teams for the first time after Kenya withdrew their team from Group 2 for financial reasons and Colombia moved up from Group 3 to Group 2 to replace Kenya.

France will first take on Venezuela, Algeria and Cameroon in Pool B3 in Yaounde, Cameroon from July 7 to 9 before playing Cameroon, Trinidad and Tobago and Australia in Pool D3 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from July 14 to 16. The Group 3 Finals will take place on July 22 and 23 in Canberra, Australia.
