Team profile

Defending champions Brazil have been a dominant force in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix and in the last 12 editions have won the title eight times finishing runners-up on three other occasions.
Brazil is a volleyball-loving nation and will try to put behind them the huge disappointment of their elimination in the quarterfinals of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in the hands of China, embarking on a new cycle as they chase a ninth Grand Prix title. Brazil won the gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and did the same at London 2012 to become the third team, after the Soviet Union and Cuba, to retain the Olympic title. The Brazilians also took Olympic bronze at Atlanta in 1996 and at Sydney 2000. They have won the South American Championship 18 times, including the last 10 times of asking. They finished third at the World Championship in Italy in 2014 having come second to Russia at the previous two editions. They also won the Grand Champions Cup in 2005 and 2013.

Following the disappointment of 5th place at their ‘home’ Olympics in Rio 2016, Jose Guimaraes is building a renewed team aiming to take Brazil to new heights and all the way to the Tokyo 2020 Games. The 63-year-old has already led Brazil to 8 FIVB World Grand Prix gold medals – including the latest edition last year in Bangkok. His long list of achievements in the sport extends far beyond this tournament however. He is the only coach to win Olympic gold medals with both a men’s and women’s team, when he led Brazil’s men at Barcelona 1992 and the women at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Since taking over as Brazil’s women’s team coach in 2003, ‘Ze Roberto’ has guided them to six consecutive South American Championships from 2003 to 2013 and gold at the 2011 Pan American Games.
