Overview

Team profile

Russia

Russia have won three FIVB World Grand Prix titles but it has been 14 years since they last topped the podium in 2002 (following titles in 1997 and 1999). With a total of three gold, six silver and four bronze medals they are the third most successful team in the history of the competition after Brazil and USA (though in total medals they rank second only to Brazil). Last year Russia finished fourth in the Final Six in Bangkok.
Taking into account their years competing as the Soviet Union, the Russians are the most successful nation in the history of women’s volleyball. They claimed Olympic gold medals in Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972, Moscow 1980 and Seoul 1988. They have also won the FIVB World Championship seven times and the European Championship on 18 occasions and triumphed in the 1973 FIVB World Cup and the 1997 FIVB Grand Champions Cup. In their most recent appearances Russia finished fifth at the 2014 World Championship and were knocked out by Serbia in the quarterfinals of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
