Thailand made their FIVB World Grand Prix debut in 2002 and have participated in all but the 2007 edition since. Their best ranking remains fourth place from the 2012 edition. Last year they ranked sixth when they hosted the Final Six in Bangkok.
They have never qualified to the Olympic Games, after narrowly missing out in the 2016 qualifiers, but have appeared four times in the FIVB World Championships – their best finish 13th in 2010. Thailand first climbed on the podium of the Asian Games in 2014, after beating Japan 3-0 in the bronze medal match. They were twice crowned Asian champions, in 2009 and 2013, and also have three bronze medals in the competition including from the latest edition in 2015 when they beat Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the third-place playoff.
