Egonu scores 32 as Italy beat USA 3-1

 

Paola Egonu towered over the USA blockers as she scored 24 of her 32 points from the attack line in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Finals

Nanjing, China, August 3, 2017 – Paola Egonu scored 32 points to lead Italy to a 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21) win over USA to secure a semifinal spot in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre on Thursday.

World Grand Prix - Scores

Egonu showed fine form on offence and defence as she scored 24 attacks, six blocks and two aces. Caterina Bosetti, Raphaela Folie and Cristina Chirichella were Egonu’s support crew in the four-set win, scoring 10, nine and eight points, respectively. Andrea Drews top scored for USA with 16, and Lauren Gibbemeyer added 13 points.

World Grand Prix – Match Statistics by Teams

Italy earned their 10th win in 21 matches against USA in the World Grand Prix, which secured them a seat in the semifinals for the first time since 2006. USA, on the other hand, have experienced their worst streak since losing four in a row in 2013.

Italy played with an organised attack pattern led by Egonu, which allowed them to take the first set win at 25-21. USA bounced back and snatched the second set 25-22. Egonu’s great attack game prevailed at the end of the third set, giving the Italians a 2-1 set-advantage. Egonu continued to get past the USA defence with her strong hits to secure her team’s 3-1 victory.
