Mihajlovic powers Serbian tie-break triumph

 

Brankica Mihajlovic scored 25 points to lead Serbia in their fifth-set comeback in 2017 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix

Nanjing, China, August 2, 2017 – Brankica Mihajlovic tallied 25 points to lead the Serbian 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 18-25, 15-11) comeback win over USA in opening match of the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Group 1 Finals at Nanjing Olympic Sports Center on Wednesday.

World Grand Prix - Scores

Mihajlovic had a prolific night on offence with 21 attacks and helped out on defence with four blocks. Tijana Boskovic also delivered big numbers to help Serbia with 22 markers. Michelle Bratsch top scored for USA with 17 points, then Lauren Gibbemeyer added 17 points. The Europeans edged the North Americans in attacks 60-49 and in blocks 16-12.

World Grand Prix – Match Statistics by Teams

Serbia repeated their Rio 2016 Olympic Games 3-2 win against the United States at the semifinal – their last major competition encounter. Mihajlovic continues to be the scoring leader of Serbia after finishing with 153 points in the preliminary round.

Serbia countered USA’s excellent service game with their great attacking and blocking schemes that allowed them to gain the first two set victories at 25-22 and 25-17. USA recovered in the next two frames as Gibbeymeyer, Bartsch, Tetori Dixon and Andrea Drews took charge on offence to win 25-23 and 25-18. Serbia had a better finish in the tie-breaker 15-11 as Mihajlovic became unstoppable from the attack line.
