Team profile

Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan played in the FIVB World Grand Prix for the first time in 2007 finishing 10th, which remains their best ranking to date. Competing for the seventh time last year, Kazakhstan finished the Group 3 Intercontinental Round on a 4-2 record and in fourth place. In the Group finals, which they hosted in Almaty, they beat Colombia 3-2 in the semifinals, but lost to Croatia in the final 3-0.
They have qualified for the Olympic Games only once, ranking 8th in Beijing 2008. However they have taken part three times in the FIVB World Championship, with their best performance of 15th coming in the latest edition in 2014, after a 17th place in 2006 and a 21st in 2010. Kazakhstan won the bronze medal of the 2010 Asian Games. They had previously been silver medallists at the 2005 Asian Championship, after losing 3-0 in the final to China.

Shapran Vyacheslav

Shapran Vyacheslav

Vyacheslav Shapran will be leading Kazakhstan for the second season this year. The 69-year-old played professionally for Burevestnik in Almaty, winning the USSR championship in 1969 and the European Champions Cup twice in 1970 and 1971. After shifting to coaching, Shapran worked with the men’s National Team of Algeria as well as the Sousse club of Etoile in Tunisia. In his native Kazakhstan Shapran took charge of the Almaty club of Rakhat and of the women’s National Team as of 2001. He led Rakhat to six national titles and an Asian Club Championship and coached Kazakhstan at the 2006 FIVB World Championship. He directed the club of Zhetyssu from 2011 to 2015, before rejoining the Kazakh national squad.
