Korea



After sitting out the last two editions, Korea return this year to the FIVB World Grand Prix for their 18th appearance. Korea feature in the competition’s medals table, having won the bronze in 1997 after a 3-1 win over Japan in the deciding match of the finals pool.Korea have participated in all the Olympic tournaments except Moscow 1980 and Barcelona 1992. They twice came close to a medal, losing the bronze medal matches in Munich 1972 to North Korea 3-0 and in London 2012 to Japan also 3-0. At the FIVB World Championships Korea won bronze medals in 1967 and 1974 but have not been on the podium since. They failed to qualify in the latest edition of 2014. Korea have also won bronze medals in the first two editions of the FIVB World Cup in 1973 and 1977. At continental level they have never won the Asian Championship (7 silver and 8 bronze), but have take gold twice (1994 and 2014) at the Asian Games.

Hong Sungjin

Hong Sunjin replaces Lee Jung-Chul at the helm of Korea as of this year. His relationship with the National Team of Korea started in 2002 and at the London 2012 Olympic Games he was assistant coach when the team claimed the bronze medal. In 2013 he coached the women’s National Team of Peru and upon returning to his native Korea he led the country’s women’s U23 team to bronze at the 2015 Asian Championship.
